Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata was founded in 1952 by Rukmani Devi Birla. The first Principal was Mrs. Violet Clarke. It is an all-girls’ institution committed to developing thinking, independent and strong young women. MHS is free of any bias and embraces all students on equal terms irrespective of religion, community or socio-economic background. It offers a liberal education which is intended to motivate students to discover and build on their own individual strengths and contribute to society in turn. The school has produced an astonishing number of outstanding alumnae who have done their alma mater proud. They are continuing to do so in different corners of the globe. The school is recognized by the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) for International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) for Classes 11 & 12 and Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) for International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) for Classes 9 & 10.     "Worthy ex- students are Anuradha Das, Vinita Saraf, Ananya Chhaohharia, Alka Yagnik, Gargi B Dasgupta etc etc. In 2023, Sanvi Atul Sharma Class VIII B has been rewarded in the John Locke Essay Competition and Arf Bhan and Rishmita Brahmachari Class XII B acquired the first prize in the Magazine Cover Design conducted by ISDI as a result of contest. The faculties of the school are very knowledgeable and skilful in teaching and provide careful attention. It has a great physical and organisational structure. The performance is splendid. Admired Smt Rukmini Devi Birla set up the school for Girls in 1952. It is affiliated with the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination."

    "The most fraud school ever seen. Applied for daughter's admission in nursery this year. The selection process was random. And no list of selected candidates ever published. Only a notification published on their website after 3months saying that "all seats have been filled up. if there will be vacancy we will let you know." They gave no explanations on how the seats have been filled up without publishing list of selected candidates. Why distributing admission forms if the candidates are already selected beforehand? Lack of transparency is not expected from a renowned school. If you have lots of money your ward will be admitted otherwise no chance of getting admission. As simple as that. Cheaters."

    "The brand of MHS commands a value in Cal. Highly selective school with excellent academic track. Girls are taught to think deep and study hard owing to the rigour of the academic curriculum. Having attended SPHS, I've been to MHS a couple of times as it's my sister's school. Now both the schools are under the aegis of the Birla Group. One important parameter I will highlight about the private schools in Calcutta and primarily why they have outsmarted pupils from convent would be the discliplined atmosphere in class. The academia propels students to be attentive and not take things lightly which is why these schools top the charts each year. Being a pointer, I will also state that these two schools in my opinion have churned out some of the finest personalities in the city( for details, check out their alumni list). Also after many years, these two schools have maintained it's standard which is why they're sought after. I'm a proud Pointer and my sister, in few years down the line will be a proud Modernite."
