On the 1st of April 1956 Carmel School, then known as St. Mary's Carmel School was started at 19, Deshapriya Park Road, Kolkata - 26. It began as a Primary School consisting of the Lower and Upper Kindergarten and classes I-IV with English and Bengali as mediums of instruction. The need for more class rooms necessitatedexpansionandclassesVupwards wereshiftedto 41, Gariahat Road, South. The school aims at the education of the Catholic community around and extends its services to members of all other communities to the extent possible. The school stands for academic excellence, love of God and service of people as modelled on Jesus Christ, with a view to training students to be good citizens, committed to God and Country.

    "I studied here from LKG to Class 4. Left in 2007. Apart from the emphasis on English and discipline, this school did not have anything to offer. From class 1 onwards, teachers did not care if you learned or understood lessons. Bullying was never stopped. Personal encouragement or motivation/confidence building was never given. There weren't any extra curriculars apart from reading and music class (bless the professor, he was a gem). As a shy but curious kid, I hated going to school because making diverse friends or asking questions wasn't encouraged. Any desire to deeply learn or be unconventional would be mocked, making it a toxic atmosphere. As a result, my grades suffered on any subject that was school dependent. Only English, art etc went well as they were also my personal hobbies at home. Grateful that my parents shifted me to DPS in class 5, the vibe was instantly 10x better. Within weeks, I began topping subjects and became talkative and social. The experience really drove the point home that a school's environment makes the child, and not their supposed 'rigour' in teaching 🙄 If you want a well-rounded child and have other options, please do not send them here or to Carmel High School. It's possible things have changed now, but my experience here was so terrible that it left a permanent scar on my mind. The neglect at Carmel had almost killed my hope in adults and the world. I hope the administration reads this and realises how important it is to rein in arrogance, and to check in on the mental well-being of their students. Children are coming to to you with their hopes and dreams, it's your job to protect them."
