On April 1st, 1956, Carmel School, previously known as St. Mary’s Carmel School, was established at 19, Deshapriya Park Road, Kolkata – 26. It initially served as a primary school offering Upper and Lower Kindergarten, as well as classes 1 – IV with English and Bengali as the mediums of instruction. Due to the need for more classrooms, classes V and above were relocated to 41, Gariahat Road South. The school received recognition as a Higher Secondary School in 1969 and was later renamed Carmel High School. The first batch of Secondary students graduated in 1970.

In January 1975, the school adopted a new curriculum following the revised scheme of studies introduced by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. In 1996, Carmel High School was upgraded to Carmel Higher Secondary School, offering all three streams – Science, Commerce, and Arts.

The school's mission is to provide education primarily to the Catholic community while extending its services to members of other communities when possible.
