In 1933, on the 9th of January, six pioneers of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes - Sr. Marie Martha, Sr. Marie Patrick, Sr. Marie Teresita, Sr. Maria Vincentia, Sr. Maria Joanna and Marie Prescilla - were sent to Whitefield by the parish priest of Whitefield Church, Rev. Fr. Levelle. Their mission was to open a convent school and educate children as well as care for the sick in the area.
On the 14th of January, an English Medium Primary School was opened for 12 children, while a Kannada Primary School was opened on the 16th of January. Classes were conducted in the church premises. Seeing the sisters' enthusiasm, personal care for the students, and dedication, the locals chipped in to build a small school. In 1938, the Kannada Medium School was granted permanent recognition. It was the first school to be recognized by the government.
Over the past 84 years, St. Joseph's Convent Schools have grown in strength and quality education. Graduates have been well-placed in government jobs, entrepreneurship, and private companies.
