The person in question was born in Kowdoor village and received his early education in Karkala and Mangalore. He then pursued his college education at the Presidency College in Madras, where he received a B.A (Honors) in Economics, followed by a Law degree from the Government Law College in Madras.
After starting his legal practice in Karkala in 1936, he moved to Mangalore and became the Public Prosecutor of South Kanara district in 1948. He was elected as a Member of the First Council of States (now known as Rajya Sabha) and in 1954, he represented India at the General Assembly of the United Nations. Later, he became a Judge of the Mysore High Court, and in 1966, he was appointed as the first Chief Justice of the Delhi and Himachal Pradesh High Court. He held this position until he was elevated to the post of Judge of the Supreme Court of India in 1967. However, he resigned from this office in 1973 in protest against the supersession of senior judges in the appointment of the Chief Justice of India. In 1977, he was elected to the Lok Sabha and was appointed as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, a position he held until 1980.
After a distinguished career, he retired from public life and settled in Nitte, where he continued to work tirelessly towards the upliftment and empowerment of rural people. Justice K S Hegde passed away on May 25, 1990.
